Dropping a living room two or three steps below the surrounding floor creates the most complete sense of a separate room without a single square foot of wall — and it is the most expensive and most constrained option, because it means re-framing the floor structure. It is realistic in an addition, over an unexcavated area, or where the framing already allows it.
